Chrome and Google Play for slower connections
Google wants to bring the content to everybody even for the consumers with connectivity challenges via Google Play and Chrome browser for Android and Chromebooks.
Chrome has been offering fast browsing experiences even on the slowest internet service on Android and desktop computers.
Connectivity being a challenge in India, Google wants to enhance the experience of internet by optimizing browser Chrome to work on slowest/2G connections and reduce the usage of data while viewing multimedia heavy content like videos, images. Google says this is achieved by the enhanced 'Data Saver' mode on Chrome to load webpages faster than before.
Chrome will also let you save the webpages offline to view images, videos, music without an active internet connection after downloading them on their phones or desktops. If the download is interrupted by a bad connection, the same will resume once the connectivity is back.
Google Play will also be tailored for 2G connections, where the content can be accessed by anybody without many interruptions. Google Play is indicated to cache the data for PlayStore when on Wi-Fi, saying it will pre-load popular content from the app store, and also enable to option to "Wait for WiFi" to install only when there is an active WiFi connection available to save cellular data.
Google News on Lite
Google has many sites cached and delivers a lite version the main websites when the bandwidth is seemingly less. This is has been applied widely over the search results across the web.
Google News and Weather app will now support Lite mode, where the news is trimmed to present with only content that is essential to the topic. On a congested or a low-bandwidth network, Application will autmotically set itself to the Lite mode for a smoother experience.
Caesar Sengupta, VP, Next Billion Users Team, from Google appreciates the information and knowledge gained from the Indian experience which inspired Google Maps Offline, has seen a tremendous success even in countries with faster connections that India, using it for places where the connection is less and making the map use seamless.
