India’s broadband connection base was up only 2.60% to 14.31 million at the end of May 2012, from 13.95 million at the end of April, according to the Indian telecom regulator TRAI. The mobile connection base increased to 929.36 Million in May as compared to 921.01 Million in April, an increase of 0.91%, but on a comparatively larger base. 74.17% of mobile connections are active – a total of 689.31 million connections, but this includes multi-SIM users, so the total mobile user base is likely to be smaller.

The Active connection data represents peak VLR (Visitor Location Register) data for the month, and excludes the CDMA VLR data for BSNL, which the telecom operator has not provided. Some stats:

- Both Tata Teleservices and Aircel reported declines in their active connection bases: Tata Tele’s base base declined month by 171,498 to 47.1 million, while Aircel’s base went down by 125801 to 37.18 million
- There were 689.31 million active connection in the month of May.
- Idea has 92.33% of its connections active- the maximum among all the operators.
- Airtel has the second highest active connection base of 91.21%, followed by Vodafone at 88.99%.
- S Tel, Etisalat, MTNL, Videocon, and Loop are at the bottom in terms of the number of active subscribers.
In terms of the number of active subscribers, Airtel leads with 169.01 million, Vodafone at 135.69 million.



Mobile Operator Leaderboard For May 2012:

- Bharti Airtel added 2.01 million connections,taking its connection base to 185.30 million.
- Idea Cellular added 1.75 million connections,taking its connection base to 115.96 million.
- Uninor added 1.52 million connections, taking its connection base to 45.07 million.
- Vodafone added 1.20 million connections, taking its connection base to 152.48 million.


- In terms of Active connections, J&K leads with 84.73% active subscribers, followed by Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Mumbai has just 61.69% active subscribers, the lowest among all circles.
- Tamil Nadu has the most number of connections, with 78,960,425 connections. UP (East) is second with 77,743,555 and Maharashtra is third, with 70,997,969 connections.
- Bharti Airtel holds the maximum percentage market share of wireless connections at 19.94%, Reliance is at 16.58%,Vodafone at 16.41%,Idea at 12.48% and BSNL is at 10.51%.
- Companies like HFCL and Etisalat hold a mere 0.16% and 0.00% of the market share respectively.

Four telecom operators reported a decline in their connection base during the month:
- Tata Teleservices’ connection base declined by 1.61% (1.31 million) to 47.52 million connections.
- Loop Telecom’s connection base declined 3.37% (0.1 million) to 3.15 million connections.
- Videocon’s connection base declined by 10.6% (0.66 million) to 5.57 million connections
- HFCL’s base declined by 5266 connections


Active User Base of Telecom Operators

- There were 695.80 million active connection in the month of June.
- Idea has 92.51% of its connections active- the maximum among all the operators.
- Airtel has the second highest active connection base of 90.78%, followed by Vodafone at 89.30%.

In terms of the number of active subscribers, Airtel leads with 170.03 million, Vodafone at 137.26 million.

- In terms of Active connections, J&K leads with 84.62% active subscribers, followed by Maharashtra, Assam and Madhya Pradesh. Mumbai has just 64.92% active subscribers, the lowest among all circles.
- Tamil Nadu has the most number of connections, with 79,533,169 connections. UP (East) is second with 77,429,909 and Maharashtra is third, with 71,569,044 connections.
- Bharti Airtel holds the maximum percentage market share of wireless connections at 20.05%, Reliance is at 16.55%,Vodafone at 16.46%,Idea at 12.54% and BSNL is at 10.52%.

- There were 698.08 million active connection in the month of July.
- Idea has 92.80% of its connections active- the maximum among all the operators.
- Airtel has the second highest active connection base of 90.46%, followed by Vodafone at 89.16%.
In terms of the number of active subscribers, Airtel leads with 170.79 million, Vodafone at 138.18 million.

Mobile Operator Leaderboard For July 2012:

- Bharti Airtel added 1.50 million connections,taking its connection base to 188.80 million.
- Vodafone added 1.20 million connections,taking its connection base to 154.91 million.
- Idea Cellular added 0.45 million connections, taking its connection base to 117.62 million.
- RCom lost 20.48 million connections, taking its connection base to 134.11 million.
- Tata Tele lost 2.41 million connections, taking its connection base to 77.81 million.

- In terms of Active connections, J&K leads with 83.72% active subscribers, followed by Maharashtra, MP and HP. Tamil Nadu has just 67.82% active subscribers, the lowest among all circles.
- Tamil Nadu has the most number of connections, with 78,199,334 connections. UP (East) is second with 75,534,512 and Maharashtra is third, with 69,180,712 connections.
- Bharti Airtel holds the maximum percentage market share of wireless connections at 20.67%, Vodafone is at 16.96%,Reliance at 14.68%,Idea at 12.88% and BSNL is at 10.81%.

India’s broadband connection base decreased 0.12% to 15 million at the end of February 2013, from 15.01 million at the end of January, according to the Indian Telecom regulator TRAI.

- There were 712.50 million active connection in the month of February.
- Idea has 98.37% of its connections active - the maximum among all the operators.
- Airtel has the second highest active connection base of 95.15%, followed by Vodafone at 94.99%.

In terms of the number of active subscribers, Airtel leads with 177.57 million followed by Vodafone at 142.37 million.

GSM mobile subscribers rise 1.16 percent to 721.93 million in March


The number of mobile subscribers on GSM network grew by 1.16 percent to 721.93 million in March, as per the latest data released by industry body COAI.

"All India GSM cellular subscriber figures as of March, 2014 reached 721.93 million. The (number of) GSM subscribers increased by 8.26 million in March 2014, 1.16 percent increase from previous month," The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said in its report on Monday.

The number excludes subscribers of Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices, which also have GSM licences but do not report numbers to COAI.

After picking up growth momentum in November 2013, March saw a dip in subscriber growth. In February, over 10.26 million subscribers were added by GSM operators.

The growth in March was led by Idea Cellular, which added over 2.23 million subscribers, followed by Vodafone with 2.22 million and Airtel 1.89 million.

Aircel, Uninor and Videocon added 1 million, 0.72 million and 0.32 million customers, respectively.


Airtel continued to lead GSM mobile services market with a subscriber base of 205.39 million.

When initially reported by COAI, additions in the month of February did not include users from the country's largest operator Bharti Airtel, as the data could not be compiled due to a technical problem.

Idea Cellular in February added 33.32 lakh new users to take its subscriber base to 13.35 crores at the end of February. Vodafone added 21.55 lakh new subscribers and its base stood at 16.43 crores, with 23.11 percent market share.

Videocon user base grew by over 10 percent during February, with additions of 4.33 lakh and its base had increased to 46.66 lakh.

Uninor and Aircel added 9.70 lakh and 7.02 lakh users respectively. Uninor subscriber base moved up to 3.48 crores, while that of Aircel was 6.91 crores.

State-owned telecom firm MTNL, which operates in Delhi and Mumbai, added 12,358 subscribers during February taking its user base to 33.79 lakh.

The GSM rural subscriber base stood at 28.88 crores at the end of February.
