The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea for transfer of a case sought by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) regarding a challenge to inter-connection usage charges by Idea Cellular, from Gujarat to Delhi high court.

The telecom regulator had moved the apex court seeking to transfer the case from Gujarat to Delhi high court which is hearing similar pleas by Vodafone Mobile Services and Bharti Airtel.

Trai had contended that since the issue at hand has been challenged by Vodafone and Airtel at the Delhi high court, all pleas should be heard together after the transfer.

Various telecom companies, including Vodafone and Airtel, had challenged Trai’s Telecommunication Interconnection Usage Charges (Eleventh Amendment) Regulations, 2015 that came into effect from 1 March.

As per these regulations, fixed termination charges payable by telcos for wireline-to-wireless stood at zero paise and wireless-to-wireless at 0.14 paise per minute.

These were termed as being “arbitrary, illegal and against the principles of natural justice” by telcos.

Nahi bhai, it's like if a Vodafone customer is calling competition, the competition has to pay some charges and these telcos are opposing this.
