The Cellular Operators Association of India has written to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who heads the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM), to quash the GSM spectrum held by Tata Teleservices.

It has also asked the EGoM to auction the spectrum currently held by Tata Teleservices along with other spectrum due for auction by August 31. The industry body has claimed claiming that the February 2 Supreme Court order cancelling 122 telecom licences and spectrum issued after 2008 also applies to Tata Teleservices.

The Telecom Regulatory authority of India has excluded the GSM spectrum held by Tata Teleservices from the auction.

Tata Teleservices offers GSM, CDMA and 3G services in the country.

The COAI is a industry body that represents GSM operators in the country.

COAI claims that Tata Tele got its GSM spectrum through a press release issued in January 2008.

In a statement issues late evening on Monday, Tata Teleservices dismissed the COAI’s allegation, calling it ‘misleading, totally uncalled for, false and devoid of any merit’.
