Vine mobile app will be unavailable in the coming months, the company announced on 27th of October. Twitter owned video sharing Vine app was a popular app among teens and early-twenties which created a buzz when it launched in 2013 as iOS only app. Vine was independent service in 2012 before Twitter went and acquired it.
App limited videos of length 6 seconds and less, with auto-looping enabled. Seen as a constraint by many YouTube users, it did not stop from users creating some amazing videos. Comedy was the largest and most trending content on Vine, and the users were called as 'Viners.'
Vine, like other social platform, was popular in North America with its own list of celebrities. 18-year-old Shawn Mendes from Canada is one of the Vine artists who found fame and recognition through the app and is now one of the best selling singer-artist in the US and across the globe. India did not see much of 'vines' initially due to the lack of marketing, although there were few funny social media users who made the best use of the medium. One of them being MTV India presenter and Comedian Jose (Hoezay).
Vine was later made available on Android and website, with a latest release on Windows 10 platform in May 2016. Like any other product or service Vine too faced severe competition from Snapchat and Facebook's Instagram. Although Snapchat was focused on ephemeral messaging, it was Instagram's introduction to video sharing that took a hit on Vine service. Instagram 'borrowed' the new video sharing feature with lengthier videos and editing features, which was essentially Vine with longer videos. Some of the brands have used Vine as their promoting tool including Nike, Chelsea FC, & General Electric USA.
The company Twitter is in a lot trouble with uncertain future and recent layoffs to cut down the expenditure.
Content on Vine will be available on the website without any deadline.
If you don't know what Vine is, maybe you never to have any more. But if you're just curious head to vine.co and find out for yourself.
