MUMBAI: Disney India will axe its Bollywood news and entertainment channel UTV Stars. Replacing it will be a pure-play music channel called Bindass Play, a source familiar with the development said.

Incidentally, this will be Siddharth Roy Kapur’s first strategic move in the broadcasting space since he took charge of Disney India as managing director on 1 January.

Disney plans to launch Bindass Play on 1 October, the source said. The company recently got the approval from the government, he added.

Disney is building the Bindass brand in India. It already runs a youth entertainment channel by that name, airing shows and music.

“The plan is to extend the Bindass brand. The new channel will have the Bindass brand associated with it and there will be a youth genre connect,” the source said.

Bindass is Disney India’s highest revenue-earner in the broadcasting business. The other channels in the Disney bouquet are UTV Movies, UTV Action, UTV World Movies, Disney Channel, Hungama TV and Disney Junior.

Launched in 2011, UTV Stars offered popular Bollywood content including music and feature-based programming. It faced competition from Zoom and E24.

MUMBAI: Hindi entertainment channel Bindass has announced a new music channel called 'Bindass Play' which will have 13 shows in a day. The channel will play peppy music in the morning and down tempo music in the night, which would be more like Mood Mapped music channel. It will be launched by 1 October.

The channel hopes to offer viewers with curated music of their choice and the information which will be gathered through social media requests and SMS requests. The channel will play only 5-10 per cent of non-film music and promises to deliver five hours of music every day.

The channel stated that it is India's first crowd sourced channel which strives on the motto to inspire, to celebrate and to empower. The tagline of the channel is 'Saath Hain Toh Baat Hain'. The channel targets the age group of 15-25 years and will play music not older than the 90s music.

Shows like 'Melody Remedy' and 'Ishq Messenger' will be aired on the channel. A couple of others will be launched In October and then the other two in January and February and then two more in April.

The second level content plans will be announced By December-January.

The channel is launched along with four brand partners and is based around strong research, claims the channel.

Disney India MD Siddharth Roy Kapur said that it will not be a general entertainment channel as the channel wants to be a part of the spectrum in which resources are best used. He also added that Disney plans to make optimum use of UTV acquisition.

"Bindass Play is distributed across digital and analog. It will be available through DTH and MSOs". "Bindass and Bindass Play will not be available in the same package as the new channel will rate bit higher than other channels because it is a Premium channel."
