MUMBAI: Disney India will axe its Bollywood news and entertainment channel UTV Stars. Replacing it will be a pure-play music channel called Bindass Play, a source familiar with the development said.
Incidentally, this will be Siddharth Roy Kapur’s first strategic move in the broadcasting space since he took charge of Disney India as managing director on 1 January.
Disney plans to launch Bindass Play on 1 October, the source said. The company recently got the approval from the government, he added.
Disney is building the Bindass brand in India. It already runs a youth entertainment channel by that name, airing shows and music.
“The plan is to extend the Bindass brand. The new channel will have the Bindass brand associated with it and there will be a youth genre connect,” the source said.
Bindass is Disney India’s highest revenue-earner in the broadcasting business. The other channels in the Disney bouquet are UTV Movies, UTV Action, UTV World Movies, Disney Channel, Hungama TV and Disney Junior.
Launched in 2011, UTV Stars offered popular Bollywood content including music and feature-based programming. It faced competition from Zoom and E24.
