The film is based on KM Nanavati case in 1950s. It was after this case that the jury system was abolished in india.
However, the movie has an unnecessary filmy ending which defeats the very purpose of the film. Cant see why these filmmakers change the historical facts.

Yes, there was a jury system. Majority of the jury declared Nanavati not guilty. There was uproar that jury can be easily manipulated by media and public pressure.

Actually they ended the movie midway. Nanawati won that case in reality, but in the last scene prosecution said they'll appeal in high court. They appealed, and in that case, Nanawati was found guilty...
