I don't understand why they can't stretch the widescreen picture to 16:9 instead of cropping it?

Thats what I am saying. To remove black bars, instead of cropping the picture to 16:9, why dont they 'stretch' the picture to 16:9. That way, there won't be any black bars, and no content would be lost....
