Reliance Jio said that it is working with Samsung on a “massive” 4G LTE network expansion project in rural areas of the country, besides working to bring 5G services in India.
“Samsung and Jio will go forward together. We are pushing Samsung very hard. India is the leading market by volume… We have massive expansion projects going on into rural areas,” Reliance Jio’s SVP of wireless networks, Tareq Amin said.
Samsung is the sole 4G equipment provider to Reliance Jio, having bagged successive contracts to supply equipment for over 140,000 sites for pan-India coverage, ET earlier reported. The gear vendor has already deployed over 100,000 4G sites across the country. Jio’s plan is to match Airtel and Vodafone in terms of cells sites across the country. Both Airtel and Vodafone have close to two lakh telecom sites each.
Samsung on Tuesday announced its "I&G (Infill & Growth) Project" for Reliance Jio that will help expand both the current network capacity as well as network coverage. The project will extend Jio services in rural areas by expanding its reach to over 90 per cent of the population and enable seamless indoor and outdoor coverage in dense urban areas.
The Mukesh Ambani-led telco has also partnered with Samsung to provide Jio apps on the latter’s Android and Tizen smartphones. “We are also ensuring that Tizen phones work on Jio network and support all our applications,” said Jyotindra Thacker, president (technology) at Jio.
Thacker said that Jio’s quality of service will differentiate it from competition instead of pricing. “Our network will deliver a superior video experience. We haven’t built another telco, but built an ecosystem,” he added.
Reliance Jio, which has all-IP network, said that it will be easier for the telco to migrate to 5G more seamlessly than what other telcos would need to do. “…it’s relatively straight forward. We are ready for it. LTE has a long way to go,” Jio’s Amin said.
