MUMBAI: The wait for direct-to-home (DTH) operator Sun Direct to get additional transponders has got longer as Measat Global Berhad has rescheduled the launch of its new satellite to September. Measat-3b was scheduled to launch on 6 June but had to be postponed after the manufacturer of the Measat-3b co-passenger requested time for repairs to their satellite. “The launch of Measat-3b has been postponed to September and we hope to get our transponders in October,” Sun Direct managing director Mahesh Kumar told TelevisionPost.com. Sun Direct is hoping to hoping to get six to nine transponders once Measat-3b is launched. Currently having four transponders, the DTH company is keen to add over 170 channels, including 20 HD channels. “We are clearly disappointed with the delay and are currently in co-ordination with Arianespace (the launch service provider) on the rescheduling of the launch. We will provide an update when we receive further information on the revised launch date,” said Measat Satellite Systems CEO Paul Brown-Kenyon. Measat-3b is designed to provide an additional 48 high-powered Ku-band transponders to the 91.5°E orbital slot to expand DTH and VSAT services across Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia. Co-located with Measat-3 and Measat-3a, the satellite will more than double Measat’s Ku-band capacity at 91.5°E, creating one of the region’s most powerful and robust orbital locations.

The announcement comes after Sun Direct got a nod from Antrix Corporation for additional capacity. The platform currently has 11 HD and 210 SD channels. “We had applied to Antrix and have got its approval. With this, we will be shifting to MEASAT 3b and hence, will get nine transponders by first week of June. Our HD offering is currently low, but with the extra capacity we aim to take it to 30, while we expect the number of SD channels to go up to 350,” informs Sun Direct MD Mahesh Kumar.

measat3b isn't launched due to technical error of another satellite hence sun direct won't get additional tp until measat 3b is launched into orbit.

But they must be having some space till the new satellite gets operational. Isn't it.

And now with the new government, I am sure this permission and satellite scarcity will improve.

I don't think they have much space now to add new channels. They can add another 5 channels. That is all. But, after September, they will add many channels and HD channels.

I also planning to shift D2H earlier. But, now decided to wait till 3b launch. After that I am sure that Sun Direct will add many south and HD channels...

I also suggest you to stay with Sun Direct. 2-3 months is hardly much time and once Transponder is activated, they will line up new channels and that too for South Languages.
