Desuetude, a word even some adults may find difficult to pronounce and spell was the winning word for 14-year-old Ananya Upadhya at the eighth edition of the Classmate Spell Bee powered by the Times of India.
A student of Sri Kumaran Childrens' Home CBSE, Bengaluru, Upadhya was declared as the national champion of India's largest spelling competition. The competition was conducted across 30 cities in India and saw a participation of over 3 lakh students in 950 schools to test their English spelling schools.
Hosted by actor Soha Ali Khan, the contest saw Samyukta Shrivatsa from PSBB Learning Leadership Academy, Bengaluru finish as the first runner-up. "In the age of autocorrect and spell checks, all of us need to celebrate the language," said Khan.
