Fiction shows on general entertainment channels (GECs) are the staple diet of the majority of audiences. The problem in this competitive genre is one of plenty. With as many as nine pay and three free-to-air Hindi GECs offering maximum of four-and-a-half hours of fiction daily on weekdays (SAB offers two hours), there is always a high probability of more misses than hits. In 2014 the top six Hindi GECs had to launch a total of 31 new fiction shows. In some cases, it was to replace a long-running show, or do away with a non-performer.
