Bharti Airtel has tied up with Research In Motion (RIM) to offer BlackBerry smartphones to Karnataka traffic police.

Senior personnel in Karnataka traffic police will now be using Blackberry devices to book motorists for traffic violations across Karnataka.

250 traffic officers of the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Police Sub-Inspectors and Police Inspectors across the state will start using Blackberry for traffic enforcement.

As part of the initiative, Bharti Airtel is providing Blackberry devices with Airtel services to them.

Bharti Airtel CEO (Karnataka Circle) Rohit Malhotra said it is a proud moment as Karnataka will be the first state in the country which will go paperless with real time monitoring of traffic enforcement.

Paper challans and police notice books will be phased out and replaced by Bluetooth enabled printers and database located at State data centre. The main objective is to reduce the use of paper-work and paper itself, the officials said.

The system -- using Blackberry devices -- has been well-received in Bangalore and was now extended to the rest of the State. Bharti Airtel provides solutions for supply and maintenance of Blackberry devices with Airtel service and thermal printers with accessories for the Karnataka police.
