Border Security Force aircraft crashed just outside IGI Airport, within five minutes of taking-off from there on Tuesday morning, killing all 10 on board including two pilots and eight technicians from the force who were headed for Ranchi to repair an Mi-17 V5 helicopter.

The commander of the 10-seater, twin-engine airplane averted a bigger tragedy by valiantly steering the crashing aircraft away from the highrise apartments of Dwarka, a passing Garib Rath train and a fuel reservoir in the vicinity.

Sources told TOI that the pilot had reportedly detected a snag in the 21-year-old plane before the flight but was asked to ignore it by the BSF ground control.
