Anna University is all set to revamp its exam pattern with effect from the November-December 2015 semester. The new pattern, expected to be set in motion from the third semester, will affect nearly five lakh students in the State.
Students in all programmes and colleges, irrespective of whether they are constituent colleges or self-financing institutions or university departments, will be tested under the new pattern which was developed by a core committee comprising nine academic members. They have made the recommendations, which will be tabled at the university’s Syndicate meeting on Wednesday. The committee was set up following severe criticism about the lack of employability of the students, officials said. There could be more discussions and the members could send it back for fine-tuning. But the pattern will be implemented in November-December, we hope,” a university official said. The new pattern will test students on their knowledge of engineering concepts, creativity, application and understanding of the subjects, a senior professor said. Engineering professors have for long held that the students often expect questions from the book as they did in school. “Engineering is not about cramming up and reproducing what is in the textbook, which is what students seem to have done in class XII,” said a professor.
To overcome the poor performance in the first few semesters, Anna University began issuing pamphlets during the single-window counselling since 2013, with questions from mathematics, physics and chemistry. According to Vice-Chancellor M. Rajaram the pamphlets would allow students to refresh their memory on concepts before they entered college. The effort did not pay off as many students did not fare well in the first few semesters and sometimes failed in several subjects.
