Another feature of Indore, impacting the cable TV sector, is the high degree of income disparity. While wages in the high-income brackets have gone up, in the middle-to-lower segments it has stagnated. The cable bills have also remained largely static, with introduction of DAS leading to marginal hikes in certain residential belts.

The net consumer cable bill ARPU (average revenue per user) is Rs 170 a month. There are higher subscription revenue pockets, but this is offset by the significant number of TV households that are in the slums.

According to TelevisionPost.com estimates, the subscription revenue collected by cable operators is Rs 62 crore (Rs 620 million) in a year.

With national multi system operators (MSOs) doing centralised deals, it is difficult to assess the carriage revenues of the MSOs. The range varies from Rs 25 per STB (set-top-box) to Rs 60 per STB, depending on the size of the cable network. Based on these parameters, we estimate the annual carriage revenue to be around Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million). Being an important part of the Hindi-speaking market (HSM), it is unlikely that this would fall. In fact, Indore will be an important outpost to carriage deals across Madhya Pradesh.
