WhatsApp users are being targeted in a dangerous new phishing attack that aims to trick people into downloading malware onto their computers.

When you receive one of these emails in your inbox, it will appear to come fromWhatsApp , but if you look at the actual FROM email address, you will see it is not from the company.

The messages have suggestive subject lines such as: "You have obtained a voice notification", "an audio memo was missed", "a brief audio recording has been delivered" and "a short vocal recording was obtained".

Each subject line ends with a set of random characters like "xgod" or "Ydkpda". These are probably used for encoding some data, to identify the recipient, according to cyber security researchers at Comodo Labs .

Each of the malicious messages also contains a compressed ZIP file as an attachment. If the recipient tries to open the attachment, it will unleash the malware, which spreads rapidly through a computer's file system.

Once the malware has been installed, hackers could user it to steal private information or take remote control of the computer.

“Cybercriminals are becoming more and more like marketers – trying to use creative subject lines to have unsuspecting emails be clicked and opened to spread malware,” said Fatih Orhan, Director of Technology for Comodo and the Comodo Antispam Labs.
