InformationWeek has learnt through its sources that Bharti Airtel is conducting Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB) trials in all the three locations (Kolkata, Pune and Bengaluru), where it has launched 4G services. The initiative will help the country's leading operator to offer voice to its 4G subscribers.
While the country's operators have already announced their plans to roll out 4G services in 2013, the key challenge to the success is offering voice along with data services. Bharti is already set to surmount this challenge by conducting trials of CSFB technology. This will enable the telco to offer voice by utilising its existing 3G or 2G network. Japan-based Softbank is another operator to have tested this technology.
Bharti is the only one to have launched 4G services in the country. Other players like Reliance Industries, Tikona Digital Networks, Videocon Telecommunications, and Aircel are likely to launch 4G services in the coming year.
