Bharti, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Telenor and Tata Teleservices to participate in 2G auction

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are among the major telecom players that have filed applications to participate in the upcoming auction of 2G spectrum, sources told NDTV.

Videocon has applied for participating in in both the 800 Mhz and 1800 Mhz bands. The 800 Mhz band is for Code division multiple access (CDMA) connections while 1800 MHz band is for Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM connections.

The Supreme Court in its February order this year decided to revoke 122 permits for mobile networks issued in a scandal-tainted sale in 2008 under the tenure of A Raja as Telecom Minister. The order saw the cancellation of 122 licenses, which the SC said were allotted in "an unconstitutional and arbitrary manner."

Bharti Airtel is not affected by that court order as none of its licenses were cancelled; but it could be looking to buy additional spectrum, sources said.

However, Idea is set to lose seven of its permits after the Supreme Court order and the auction is the last chance for the company to win them back.

"We are in the process of submitting our application," A source said
