Caste and conservatism in our TV serials

i came across this interesting article on livemint and thought of sharing it with you guys, opinions needed regarding this.


Why do most of Indian serials feature basic types like Banias, Punjabi mercantile communities or Rajputs?



The question is—why do most of the serials feature these basic types? They are either Banias, Punjabi mercantile communities or Rajputs. All together, these will not make up more than 2% of India’s population. Are we a nation that sees some castes as more attractive than others? The answer is of course yes. Even the lower castes will admit this through practice and it’s a subject for serious academic study

I think ZEE tries to bring the focus on rural serials too.

Like Afsar Bitiya, Bhagowali, Agley Janam Mohe Bitya Kijo and all that followed by COLORS but they only concentrating on Girls based serials which turned to a fancy serial so moral goes down. Even ZEE s try Qabool Hai also top serial and now COLORS following with Behintaha which is now struggling.

there shouldn't be castes stereotypes and it should all be about the families.

Indian Viewers are very conservative Bro. no one having dare to bring the dark infront of TV everyone is for business. If those things hurt business then why should anyone go for it.

The author has done a very good analysis but he has chosen all good TRP serials. There are some serials which portrays life other other caste and segment too.

And I must say most of them are related to what has been mentioned in the article.

Reason could be the producer and director who are trying to outshine their own community.

We ways try to find some story in these serials but surprisingly none if us thought from this angle.

Afsar bitiya was also rajput and baniyas.
