The Rs 25 crore extortion demand made on Gautam Thapar-led Avantha Group has turned out to be an insider job, with police on Friday arresting a senior executive of the group for allegedly masterminding the operation.

The $4 billion Avantha Group is a major business conglomerate. What magnified the profile of the crime was the fact that the extortion calls were made to Avantha director Anil Bhargava while he was travelling with PM Narendra Modi on his three-nation tour as part of the corporate delegation. Threatening text messages were also sent to chairman Gautam Thapar's secretary, police said.

While ruling out the involvement of Maoists and known underworld dons, police tracked Deepak's movement through his the SIM card used for the calls. CCTV footages at Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh airports were scanned to identify the Deepak, and local intelligence tapped to nab him from south Delhi.

Police said Jaspal Singh decided to utilize his intimate knowledge of Bhargava's family and personal affairs of his bosses to issue threats during the extortion calls.
