Government has introduced 166 , a common enquiry number to address queries on government services, such as ration card or electricity connection.
The number can be accessed through MTNL and BSNL phones. This service will soon be available through all other operators by December this year. We have also asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to decide on the tariff for making calls on this number,” said a senior Department of Electronics and Information Technology official.
Normal call rates as per the tariff plan of the subscriber will be charged for using 166 services.
This automated telephone service, like railway enquiry number, give people access to government services that can be offered through phone like checking status of any application, filling forms and many other services that are being developed.
