The entry of lowcost carrier Scoot has lowered fare on the ChennaiSingapore and ChennaiSydney routes. The airline offers a one-way ticket for Rs5,500 to Rs9,000 to Singapore and for Rs15,000 to Sydney. The Singapore route has been priced at Rs10,000- Rs15,000. while a one-way ticket to Sydney costs more than Rs35,000.

Travel agents say the new airline's entry with low fare and additional seats has brought down fares marginally on the route. This makes flying economical for leisure travellers who want to visit Sydney, Melbourne, Hanoi or Bali.

"The launch of Scoot Airlines is a significant step in accelerating overall growth for the aviation and travel & tourism industry," Thomas Cook India president and country head Indiver Rastogi said. "Chennai and Amritsar serve as viable catchments for Singapore-bound traffic. Scoot has made a smart move to open up long haul destinations like Australia which has recorded an increase in Indian tourists." Transit time at Singapore, however, remains a problem.
