Allegedly frustrated by humiliation, four female students undergoing training at the Water Sports Centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Punnamada in Kerala have attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous fruit on Wednesday. One of the students has died and the other three are in critical condition.
According to MK Ramesan, sub-inspector Alappuzha North, the students took the extreme step as they were unable to bear the humiliation after being reprimanded by their teachers. The students were scolded after being found to be in an inebriated condition.
"The 16-year-old students attempted suicide by consuming the fruit 'othalanga' (cerbera odollam)," he said.
