News Freedish is key to Doordarshan’s turn around: Parliamentary Committee

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has been asked to make efforts to complete all procedural formalities so as to facilitate the expeditious execution of Doordarshan’s Freedish project.

The technical infrastructure of the remaining 48 SDTV channels has also been installed and tested. Once these channels are made Conditional Access System (CAS) enabled in free-to-view mode, subscribers can view these channels with a one-time annual registration.

Doordarshan is planning to commission these 48 SDTV channels in Freedish MPEG-4 DVB-S2 channel mode only after implementing the CAS Service, upgrading its platform to 112 channels.

This will mean upgrading its platform to 112 SDTV channels in 2015-16, but this is subject to approval of the Home Ministry regarding security clearance of one of the shortlisted CAS service providers, which is a Chinese party. The Ministry wrote to the Home Ministry on 9 March this year seeking its views on the matter.

Encrypting channels are indicating only one thing is that Free Dish is soon gonna going to be paid.

Activation is one time initial activity. FD will never turn to pay mode. Again this encryption will take its own time

But how are you sure that they will never make Free Dish paid ?

Currently some 15 - 20 channels are available as Free Mode and they themselves bid to become Free and rest of the discussions are with encrypted channels if DD ask bhakthi, baba, teleshoppy channels to get encrypted then is they gonna ready for it ? Because by paying once they gets added in 2 DTH.

Also if Prashar Bharthi proposed to bring paid channels like Discovery in the platform then who gonna paid for them ?

I am not 100% sure. Atleast till next 5 years it will not turn into pay mode
