Arangetra Velai is a hilarious film which led to the spawning of Hindi blockbuster comedy Hera Pheri. The story revolves around Shivaramakrishnan (Prabhu) who is waiting to get a job promised to him by the company in which his father worked and died while on duty. However, he is furious when he finds out that there is another strong contender for the same post. In the meantime, he meets Masha (Revathy) who accidentally gets caught in the game. Shiva and Masha are forced to share a rented accomodation, which makes their meeting unavoidable. In the midst of all this is Shaktinadan (V.K. Ramasamy), their house owner who often falls prey to their lies. The common thread between all the characters of the film is a dire necessity of money. Are they able to realise their dreams? Does their game of deception boomerang on them?
