The Tamil Nadu government on Monday sanctioned Rs. 2 crore for the Chennai Open tennis tournament to be held in the city.

As Lead Platinum Sponsor for the event to be conducted between January 4 and January 10, the State government has sanctioned the fund. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa handed over the cheque to Tamil Nadu Tennis Association president M.A. Alagappan at the Secretariat.

It was in 2005 that Ms. Jayalalithaa had first sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for the tennis tourney. In 2012, she increased the funding to Rs. 2 crore .
