Hyundai India is planning to launch the new Tucson SUV in India in September this year. The new Tucson is Hyundai’s only SUV which is not on sale yet in India. Currently in its third generation, the new car has been showcased at Auto Expo 2016 and features an attractive modern design that brings it in line with Hyundai’s biggest SUV – the Santa Fe. Known internally as the TL, the new Tucson gets Hyundai’s big new hexagonal grille up front, elongated headlamps that stretch all the way from the grille to the fenders and heavily stylised fog lamp enclosures that contain two individual lighting elements.

Unlike the stand-up and square proportions of the Creta, the new Tucson’s silhouette is full of curves and confidently drawn slashes. This is evident when you look at its side profile. The long bonnet curves down gently, the A-pillar is visually ‘disconnected’ from the bonnet to help accentuate the length, and the heavily sculpted side looks more sports coupé than Sports Utility Vehicle. Just look at the big, canted-forward wheel arches, the sculpted rear haunches and the dropping roofline. It looks a bit like the Santa Fe from the rear, but that we assume is done on purpose to help maintain Hyundai’s SUV identity. President and chief design officer Peter Schreyer is clearly quite pleased with how Fluidic Sculpture has evolved: “The new Tucson represents the future for us, as it is the SUV that pioneers the new look, especially the grille and headlights.”

For India, Hyundai will bring the Tucson in both petrol and diesel guises, with the petrol likely to be offered on only base variants. The model for India could get the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit that is showcased at the Auto Expo along with the 1.0-litre unit. The option of auto gearboxes are being considered on both guises.

Hyundai aims to acheive 50 percent localisation with prices to likely start at around Rs 17 lakh for the base petrol going up to Rs 22 lakh for the top-spec diesel.
