MUMBAI: Before he was set to scream at people he had invited to his studio, Satyanash spoke to Arnab Goswami about demonetisation. “What is there to talk about? It’s such a success that I’m not even going to talk about the decision that I was celebrating last year. At that time I was working for Times Now and we were no. 1 but since then I have started Republic TV which is now no. 1.”
Goswami was elusive when asked about the benefits of demonetisation. We asked him what we thought of union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad’s claim that prostitution has substantially reduced in the country post demonetisation. “I don’t completely agree with that statement. If prostitution has nosedived, like he claims, then how is Republic TV the no. 1 news channel in India? The girlfriend experience I provide is witnessed by millions of Indians every night. You have to be a fucking idiot or a BJP supporter to not realize that I’m paid by the hour for my services. Sure, Times Now will say that they are the no. 1 presstitutes but we all know how much I suck up to BJP. There is no comparison. Sex workers only sell their bodies, I sell my soul. Look into my eyes when I’m on my show. I’m dead inside. I have been dead for years but now there is nothing there at all. I can’t even look at myself in the mirror anymore which is why I ask my studio crew to shave me and set my ridiculous hair.”
When asked if he thought his comparison could be seen as being insensitive to sex workers who do what they do to survive and not for higher TRPs, Goswami said: “You see, history is replete with a stock character: the hooker with a heart of gold. We see this character in Mary Magdalene, Devdas’s Chandramukhi and Sudraka’s Vasantasena. We see this character in films like Pretty Woman, Leaving Las Vegas and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. The only difference between me and these fictional characters is that I’m a hooker in real life and, instead of gold, my heart is full of that gunk that you find clogging your shower drain. Every time I focus on Shashi Tharoor and JNU students instead of BJP’s scams or their silence on lynchings, I remember what Richard Gere’s character says to the prostitute (played by Julia Roberts) he admires: ‘You and I are such similar creatures, Vivian. We both screw people for money’. I will screw anyone for money…demonetisation or no demonetisation. For a good time call Arnab.”
