India overtakes Japan as world's third-largest Internet population

here were 73.87 million Internet users in India at the end of March, propelling the country into third place in the global ranking ahead of Japan, it emerged on Thursday.

India added 17.6 million Internet users in the course of a year, giving it the second largest Internet population in the Asia-Pacific region with an 11.5% market share, according to a new report from comScore.

China naturally leads the region with 348.18 million, or 54%, of Asia-Pacific's total 644 million Internet users, while Japan comes in third with 73.64 million (11.4%).

A year ago the three countries' market shares were as follows: China 55.2%, Japan 12.2%, and India 9.3%.

Indian Internet users spend the bulk of their browsing time on social media, comScore claims. Social networking accounts for 25% of online minutes, ahead of 23% on services, such as email and instant messaging. The figures refer to users accessing the Internet via a home or work PC.
