An artificial lake in Zanskar subdivision of Kargil suddenly burst on 8 AM on Thursday threatening villages downstream. The water from the lake, which was formed after a landslide blocked Phuktal river, crossed Ichar village at 10:15 AM and is about to reach Padum which is the subdivisional headquarter of Zanskar.
People residing downstream are anxiously watching the deadly flood and according to Jammu and Kashmir Police officials a few suspension bridges have been washed away from Lungnak River.
Official have shifted people from several villages downstream to safety. While they claim that there will be no loss of, damage to property is expected.
