Despite the music television genre getting cluttered and fragmented and its focus wavering between pure-play music and youth, one company has decided to launch three music-focused channels in August this year.
Popular Entertainment Network (PEN) promoter Jayantilal Gada, who also happens to be a film producer, has confirmed that his company has acquired licences from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) to launch three music channels.
“We will launch all three channels in August,” Gada told TelevisionPost.com. The date of launch is likely to be 15 August. There will be two new channels—I Love and BT (Bollywood Times) News. While I Love will feature classic songs from the golden era of Bollywood music, BT (Bollywood Times) News, as the name suggests, will feature latest Bollywood news along with music.
MTunes HD, which had carved a space for itself, will be re-launched. The nature and the genre of MTunes, however, will remain same; the channel will cater to the latest Bollywood music.
There have already been two recent launches by major players—Viacom18’s MTV Beats, which replaced MTV Indies, and Sony Pictures Network India’s youth-focused premium channel Sony Rox HD.
The launch of these new channels by Gada will further increase competition in the genre. Some of the existing Hindi music channels include MTV, Sony Mix, Channel V, 9XM, 9X Jalwa, ETC, Zing, Mastiii and B4U Music.
The positioning of most of these channels are different. As reported earlier by TelevisionPost.com, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) is in conclusive talks to buy 9X Media for around Rs 170 crore as part of a broader plan to build a strong vertical around music channels, music labels and film production across languages.
By acquiring 9X Media, ZEEL will get the largest and only pure-play music TV vertical company in India. Besides a distinct positioning, there is also a ready revenue that ZEEL will get from the 9X Media acquisition.
9X Media runs music channels 9XM and 9X Jalwa in Hindi, 9X Jhakaas in Marathi, 9XO in English and 9X Tashan in Punjabi. It also has SpotboyE, a digital offering of Bollywood news, gossip, music reviews and other updates. SpotboyE also streams the TV channels of 9X Media.
