News Licence delays upset broadcasters and MSOs

Want to launch a new television channel? Wait, licence approvals may take years. As Prashant Chothani, owner of a clutch of music and travel channels, found out after he applied for licence to launch four new channels. Broadcasters have approached Information and Broadcasting minister Arun Jaitley to talk about such delays. Many have applied for new channels way back in 2012 and these have not been processed. Meanwhile, the marketplace has changed and many find their original business models outdated. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has laid the blame on the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). MHA has not responded to letters to expedite the process by putting in place a common methodology wherein broadcasters with no problematic background can be given easy clearances with an undertaking that their licences could be revoked in case the IB reports were adverse, I&B ministry officials have told The Economic Times.

I thought that after arrival of new government atleast channel licenses would be released quicker but here also they failed
