West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday withdrew her party’s support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre to protest the increase in diesel price, capping of subisized cooking gas supplies and opening of doors to foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail announced last week.

Banerjee said her Trinamool Congress (TMC) ministers in the central government will resign on Friday.

The Trinamool Congress is the second largest patner in the UPA with 19 members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Even if the TMC withdraws support, the UPA has a majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha as it is backed by friendly parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Parliament. The parties extend issue-based support to the government.
