Matt Machan sealed the historic victory with a six
In a rain-curtailed, inconsequential match in Nagpur on Saturday (March 12), Scotland put on an exceptional all-round show to notch up an eight-wicket win over Hong Kong, their first victory in 20 attempts in World Cups across formats.
Opting to bat first in the dead rubber, Hong Kong rode on Mark Chapman's 41-ball 40 to post 127 for 7 in their 20 overs after a brief rain interruption in the last over. Chapman scored one boundary and a six in his innings, while Jamie Atkinson (13), Babar Hayat (15), Anshuman Rath (21) and Nizakat Khan (17) were the other batsmen who reached double figures.
Matt Machan, the 25-year-old top-order batsman and handy spinner, turned his arm over rather effectively, picking up two key wickets of Rath (in the 14th over) and the big-hitting Nizakat (in the 19th over), who had arrived at the crease and smashed two sixes in his 10-ball knock of 17. The second wicket helped keep Hong Kong's total down to 127.
A rain delay followed and Scotland were asked to chase a revised total of 76 in 10 overs. Despite a solid start from George Munsey (19 off 11 balls) and Kyle Coetzer (20 not out off 19 balls), Hong Kong stayed alive by picked up two wickets at crucial junctures. Machan walked out to bat with his side on 56 for 2 in 6.1 overs and smashed 15 off four balls, including a six to finish the game in style - with eight wickets and two overs to spare.
Brief Scores: Hong Kong 127/7 in 20 overs (Mark Chapman 40; Matt Machan 2-26) lost to Scotland 76 for 2 in 8 overs (Mathew Cross 22, Matt Machan 15*; Aizaz Khan 1-11) by eight wickets (D/L method)
