Microsoft sets a Guinness World Record for the globe’s largest ever app development marathon

Code warriors are going to love this: ahead of the launch of the latest iteration of the Windows OS, Microsoft hosted the world’s largest coding marathon in Bangalore, India.
Beginning September 21 at 2pm on a sunny Friday, thousands of talented programmers and designers (including enthusiasts, students and professionals) settled into an 18-hour session, building apps to show off their skills and harness the power of Windows 8. The event set a Guinness World Record for the planet’s largest ever app development marathon.
A total of 2,567 developers participated in the marathon and were watchfully monitored by Guinness World Records officials over the span of the event. Armed with their own laptops running Windows 8 RTM and Visual Studio Express 2012, and grouped into teams of up to four members each, the throng of developers worked through nearly an entire day turning their ideas into downloads. App ideas were accepted in 20 categories, including Business, Education, Finance, Games, Music & Video, Productivity, Social and Sports.

The coding marathon wasn’t a race to the finish line, though — developers were encouraged to begin working on their apps before the actual event, and did not need to finish coding at the end of the allotted time to be counted as part of the record. Those who did however, had a chance to submit their apps for review to Microsoft’s App Excellence Labs on-site, in order to receive feedback and/or acceptance of their app into the Windows Store (where apps for Windows 8 will be made available).
Participants were also allowed to seek help from available mentors, IT assistants, recognized app developers and Microsoft engineers at the venue. Food and beverages were also provided to sustain the army of coders through the long session.

Microsoft plans to launch Surface tablet, Windows 8 at midnight

Tech giant, Microsoft is planning a midnight launch for its new Surface tablet on October 25, as the firm seeks to build momentum ahead of its debut in the tablet market.

Along with the tab, Microsoft's new dual operating system, Windows 8, will also be launched at midnight, and both products will then be available at a series of pop-up stores in the US, which will be opened specifically on the morning of October 26.

Surface will use the new Windows 8 operating system, which the company hopes will help challenge products made by Apple and Google, and allow users to replace their iPads and Windows 7 laptops with Windows 8 tablets, the Telegraph reports.

Microsoft promoting Windows 8 launch with free Wi-Fi in NYC, San Francisco

Microsoft has inked a deal with Boingo Wireless to sponsor free Wi-Fi access at select Boingo hotspots across New York City and San Francisco.

Why? To promote and celebrate the launch of Windows 8 later this month.

It's also another way to introduce the Windows Store for Windows 8 to both developers and consumers being that the Wi-Fi hotspots are based on Boingo’s Cloud Nine media platform, a global advertising network designed to enable advertisers to reach target audiences through Wi-Fi sponsorship.

Free Boingo Wi-Fi is already ready for use at hotspots in tourist hubs in both cities, including Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood and San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Starting on November 1, Microsoft will extend the promotion to more than 200 Wi-Fi hotzones across Manhattan.

The free Wi-Fi access will be available at these hotspots through the end of 2012.

Microsoft Estimated to Spend $1.5 Billion on Windows 8 Marketing

The Windows 8 launch is arguably the biggest product release in Microsoft history. To support it, the company is breaking out its checkbook.
Microsoft is reportedly spending between $1.5 billion and $1.8 billion on its Windows 8 marketing campaign, according to Forbes. That’s significantly more than what the company reportedly spent on the Windows Phone 7 launch in 2010, the last huge shift for Microsoft.
When contacted by Wired, a Microsoft spokesperson said that the company does not comment on rumors and speculation.
Microsoft hasn’t given us much sense of where the the billion dollars of advertising is going, or what its Windows 8 campaign will look like. Earlier this week, four alleged TV ads leaked, revealing that Microsoft might focus more on showing consumers Windows 8′s various features, rather than attacking other platforms. And it seems that the ads are targeted both toward people who are familiar with the Windows desktop and new buyers.
