The rain, it appears, is not done with the state. A UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific report has warned that the current northeast monsoon could extend to February 2016.
The impact of the 2015-16 El Nino could be more severe in locations such as the Cambodian uplands, central and southern India, eastern Indonesia, central and southern Philippines, central and northeast Thailand, Papua New Guinea and other Pacific island countries, said the report which was released a few days ago. "Sri Lanka and southern India could continue to experience higher than normal rainfall as per the winter South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF) outlook and this could cause further flooding, particularly urban flooding, in certain locations. In India, severe floods have already been reported in several parts of Tamil Nadu in November and December 2015," it said.
Though no two El Nino impacts are identical, past El Nino-associated risk patterns could provide guidance to anticipate future risks, the report said.
Climate change is also likely to increase El Nino risk that long-term development strategies need to factor in, it said.
