Motorola's partnership with Intel finally bears fruit with the company announcing it's first Intel powered smartphone, the RAZR i at an event in London.

Sporting looks similar to the RAZR M, the RAZR i will feature a 2GHz single-core Intel processor, which makes it the first smartphone to hit those speeds. Intel claims though single-core, the processor will be faster than other dual-core phones.

Motorola has always had phones that bore sort of a mechanical design. It was this design that originally created the Droid branding for the first Android 2.0 phone. The Razr M still bears Motorola’s mechanical look, complete with open face screws running down the sides, but all of the corners of the device have been softened to an almost gentle curve. The phone sits like a narrow wedge in your hand, growing slightly thicker at the top of the phone as you run your hand up the side. There’s some clever engineering in the face of the phone, particularly the way the speaker is hidden in the logo that runs across the top. The Kevlar back offers just enough grip to catch your fingers, allowing you to comfortable hold the handset without needing to firmly grip it.
There’s nothing mini about the Droid Razr M. In fact, it’s still bigger than Android’s biggest competitor by a significant factor. When you compare it to the massive screens of the Droid Razr HD or the Samsung Galaxy S3, the 4.3″ Super AMOLED display seems like it would be better described as reasonable than small. At 540 x 960 with 256 ppi the screen isn’t quite up to par with the iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S3 on paper, but the display on the Razr M is still very nice. The increasingly familiar Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5ghz and 1GB of RAM puts it exactly on par with the rest of the high end Android market right now. In fact, the smaller more energy efficient screen allows the 2000mAh battery in the Razr M to last much longer than the slightly larger battery in the Galaxy S3. The 8MP camera in the back is a standard in the industry right now, while the VGA front facing camera is feeling a little dated.
The Razr M is, by all accounts, a high end smartphone. If anything, this sets the bar especially high for any device that comes out next at a pricetag higher than the $99 being asked for this device at Verizon Wireless. Motorola’s decision to make a phone that actually fits in one hand will be well received by those who would like a smartphone, but aren’t necessarily interested in having a small movie theater in their pocket.
