Since March, lakhs of MTNL's landline users have not been receiving their bills in time. Owing to this, the company has been forced to repeatedly extend the due date for payments. It will also waive the late fee of Rs 40 in cases where despatch was delayed.

MTNL is Mumbai's largest telephone service provider with an estimated subscriber base of 25 lakh. "We outsource our bill printing work to another public sector unit. During the past three months, it has been unable to print the bills on time. We are finalizing another print vendor and the problem should be resolved soon. By July, customers will get bills in time," said S Antonysamy, general manager, telecom revenue (TR).

MTNL is extending the due date in keeping with the actual printing schedule. "The concept of bill date and due date has been de-linked temporarily as a stopgap arrangement. We are also waiving the surcharge in cases where the subscriber does not receive bill even after the extended date. We have given standing instructions to our customer service staff and call centres to inform users," said Antonysamy.

As a measure of goodwill, the operator will refund users who paid the late fee despite having received bills after the due date. The disconnection schedule has also been rearranged to give sufficient time of 15 days from the extended date. MTNL'scellphone subscribers are unaffected, though.
