The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has awarded 16 new television channel licences, including nine uplinking licences to NGC Network India, a subsidiary of Fox International Channels (FIC) Asia.
The MIB has also awarded two uplinking licences to Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL).
With licences in hand, NGC Network India will start uplinking channels from India. Until now, it was downlinking channels in India from Hong Kong. The company hopes to operationalise the uplinking licences by next month, says a source.
The company has received uplinking licences for National Geographic, Fox Life, Fox Life HD, Baby TV HD, Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Wild HD, Nat Geo People HD, Nat Geo Music HD and National Geographic HD. Earlier, Star India had received licences to uplink its sports channels from India.
ZEEL has received downlinking licences for launching Veria Living and Zee Café HD. It has also got approval for changing the name of Zee Khana Khazana to Living Foodz. Living Foodz, which is a food and lifestyle channel, was launched under Living Entertainment, a subsidiary of Essel Group.
Zee Living, which was first launched in the US in 2007, will mark its entry in the Indian market in the first quarter of the next calendar year. Zee Living will also be housed under Living Entertainment.
Star India subsidiary Asianet Communications has received the licence to launch Asianet HD, which went live on 13 August.
As reported first by TelevisionPost.com, Media Worldwide received a licence to launch Marathi music channel Sangeet Marathi.
The channel launched in early September. AM Television has received a licence for a non-news channel called Rengoni in Assamese language.
SAB Global Entertainment Media has got an all-language licence to launch a non-news channel called Seven Sisters Rainbow.
Cabsat Channel has received a downlinking licence to launch Australia Network, which is owned by Australian Broadcast Corporation.
827 private satellite TV channels permitted in India As on 13 August, the MIB has permitted 827 private satellite TV channels in India.
These include 400 news and current affairs channels and 427 non-news and current affairs channels.
The ministry has permitted 712 channels to uplink from India as well as to downlink into India.
2Twenty channels will be able to uplink from India but not downlink in India.
