Panasonic expects to introduce its first 8K TVs in 2018. Speaking to Inside CI, director of Panasonic’s TV business Division Masahiro Shinada said: “NHK is fast tracking plans for 8K Super Hi-Vision broadcasting, with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics a likely consumer launch pad. Every panel maker is now preparing 8K.” The business will take shape in 2018, he suggests. "That's when we will have the first test broadcasts. By then every Japanese manufacturer will be preparing consumer 8K televisions for the Tokyo Olympics.”

Shinada-san also told Inside CI that the company is so also planning a radical revamp of its 4K line in 2016, saying that UHD alone isn’t enough to bring people back to the TV market.

4K may have expanded the overall TV business, but sales will still fall a little short of expectations, he predicts. “The economic situation is still not so good from a global point of view, especially for high priced items.”

Japan’s broadcasters will have upwards of 22 4K UHD channels available by 2018. That’s the view of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. These will be a mix of free to air and pay TV services, such as sport and movies. Japanese state broadcaster NHK, will run one 4K channel and one 8K TV channel. JSAT SkyPerfecTV has already begun UHD broadcasts. The 8K service is expected to launch ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. -
