Rail fares for first class and AC classes in passenger trains and freight charges will rise by 0.5 percentage points from 1 June as new service tax will come into effect.
“Currently, 3.7% service tax is levied on train fares for AC class, first class and freight. This will go up to 4.2% from June,” a senior railway ministry official said.
Increase in service tax will be applicable on tickets purchased on 1 June and onwards, he added.
While the increase in passenger fare is applicable on AC and first class only, service tax will be levied on all goods transported by the railways. The official said the hike is marginal and it is being done as per the general budget proposals.
Service tax was first levied on passenger fares on 1 October 2012. Railways had last hiked passenger fares and freight rates by 14.2% and 6.5%, respectively in June 2014.

Nope they secretly increased the base fare while doing Tatkal Bookings. Instead of increasing the Tatkal charges, they increased the base fare silently.

If asked, they would say the development of the railways and funds needed,,let them hike but what is the use if no improvement? between the premium or another service is of no use, it seems.
