With print companies foraying into the television news space, the Indian media landscape is finding vertical integration a strong business model. The latest to jump on the bandwagon is regional print major Rajasthan Patrika.

Rajasthan Patrika has just obtained the licence from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and is gearing up to launch a satellite news channel. It already has experience in running a cable news channel.

In fact, the new government has cleared three licences, two of which are news channels who have their stronghold in the print business. Media Content and Communication Services (MCCS), the other company to receive the licence from the MIB to launch its proposed Punjabi news channel ABP Sanjha, is from the parent company which runs the popular Anandabazar Patrika Bengali daily and other print brands.

The television broadcast business is nothing new to Rajasthan Patrika. Apart from a cable news channel, it has experimented with a cable TV network.

“We got the go-ahead from the ministry on 17 July, after completing some formalities, which it had asked us to finish in one month, in June. While we have a cable news channel, this will be our first 24-hour satellite news channel in Rajasthan,” a source in the company said.

Rajasthan Patrika also operates FM radio under the brand Tadka FM in Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota and in Raipur.

“For a print company, it is ideal to have presence in television, digital and FM radio. The government may allow news in some form in future and these companies will derive synergies,” a media analyst said.

Started in 1956, Jaipur-headquartered Patrika Group is one of the largest Hindi newspaper groups in India. It publishes newspapers in eight states (Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Chhatisgarh and West Bengal).

With the upcoming launch, Rajasthan Patrika will join the ranks of print media players like ABP (ABP Ananda, ABP Majha, ABP News), Lokmat (IBN-Lokmat), Sandesh (Sandesh News) and Gujarat Samachar (GSTV News).

397 news & current affairs channels dot the media landscape India has a strong population of news and current affairs channels.

According to the latest MIB data, there are 397 news and current affairs channels out of a total of 798 TV channels that have received permission. The non-news and current affairs channels are just ahead by four.

A spate of news channels were launched ahead of the general election this year. A flawed business model does not halt the launches. Expect many more to surface in the coming years.
