Reliance Globalcom, the undersea cable unit of Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications, is in advanced talks to buy optical network gear from US-based Ciena Communications to ramp up capacity of its global submarine cable network, two senior executives aware of the development told ET.
Globalcom, which runs RCom's global carrier operations with revenues upwards of $1 billion, is upgrading its international subsea cable assets spanning over 73,000 route kms, to sell bandwidth capacity to carriers at compelling price-points. The capacity expansion in multipale terabytes will happen in Globalcom's submarine cable network passing through South Asia, Middle East, North Africa, Europe and US.
"Capacity upgradation and enhancement is an ongoing mission and Ciena is one of our empanelled vendors. But Reliance Globalcom does not publicise specific financials of its contracts with vendors," said a company spokesman, declining to reveal the deal size. Ciena India country head Ryan Perera confirmed the discussions. "We are a leading supplier to Reliance Globalcom and are in talks to supply additional packet and optical networking equipment for expanding capacity of its international submarine cable network in multiple terabytes," he said.
