Nintendo says the retro version of one of its iconic video game platforms is making a comeback in 2019.

The 8-bit NES Classic went on sale last year selling 1.5 million units, but the Japanese gaming firm shocked fans by mysteriously pulling the plug on production in April.

The company now says its NES Classic Edition will now return next summer due to popular demand.

The NES Classic Mini comes with 30 games pre-installed, including Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda

'Next summer, Nintendo will also bring back the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system with new shipments.

'More information about the timing of the return of NES Classic Edition will be announced in the future.'

The NES Classic system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and one controller, which is patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller.

The device looks almost exactly like the original NES, but smaller.
