A 30-year-old school van driver has been arrested for allegedly allowing a 17-year-old schoolboy to drive the van which had about a dozen primary students on board. The official van driver, Ramdas Shinde, knew the teenager's father who is also a driver, the police said.

Two beat marshals, who spotted the school van being driven by the minor in Kopar Khairane, intercepted it.

Senior police inspector Satish Gaikwad said that Shinde had picked up students from Koparkhairane to drop to different schools in Vashi. "But mid-journey, he allowed the 17-year-old boy, a student of class 9 of a school in Vashi, to drive the van. The boy who was driving recklessly caught the attention of the beat marshals. Also, the parents of a few children who had dropped off their children in the van chased the vehicle on their bikes or in autos, to stop it," said Gaikwad.

At sector-15, the beat marshals waylaid the van and detained the minor boy and Shinde who was seated beside the boy. "The minor did not have a driving licence, and the van driver committed the offence of handing over his vehicle to the underage boy. Both have been booked,"said a police official.
