The winter session of Parliament convened today with a special sitting to celebrate Constitution Day in a tribute to BR Ambedkar, widely regarded as the architect of the Indian constitution.
Initiating a discussion in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is also the Deputy Leader of the house, said the word 'secular' was misused in Indian politics.
1. The Home Minister said BR Ambedkar did not add the words "secular" and "socialist" in the Preamble, which were incorporated through an amendment in 1976, "BR Ambedkar did not think it was necessary to incorporate these words in the Preamble as they were part of the Constitution. It is inbuilt in the Indian system," he said amidst protests from the Congress.
2. Objecting to his remarks, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge said Ambedkar was also in favour of putting the word in the Preamble, but could not do so.
The word "Secularism" is misused in Indian politics, Mr Singh said and added that its misuse should come to an end. "The literal translation of secularism should be 'Panth Nirpekshta' and not 'Dharma Nirpekshta'. Because of the rampant misuse of the word, there have been instances of tension in the society," he said.
