SPI Cinemas received the final clearance from the office of Chennai City Police Commissioner to start operations in their 9-screen multiplex named Palazzo built inside Forum Vijaya Mall in Vadapalani on Saturday. It is also reliably learnt that the management is planning a launch of the multiplex as early as next week.
The management has waited for more than two years to obtain these licences. Many in the entertainment industry indicated that PVR Ltd. was also given the ‘C’ form licences required to start their operations in their multiplex at Grand Mall Velachery. However, the official spokesperson of PVR Ltd. neither confirmed nor denied the development.
Few weeks ago, PVR Ltd. filed a case against the office of City Police Commissioner at the Madras High Court for delaying passing orders on the application. The two new multiplexes, if and when it starts its operations, will add close to 3,500 seats and will increase the number of screens in the city to 250. While PVR Cinemas already operates seven screens at Ampa Skywalk mall, SPI Cinemas has 22 screens in Chennai.
