The Supreme Court on Friday directed Doordarshan and other private channels to spread awareness against the harmful effects of the Blue Whale Challenge by broadcasting it in their prime time.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra after hearing a plea by two advocates, observed that the Blue Whale challenge is indeed a national problem. Advocates N S Ponnaih and Sneha Kalita filed petition seeking complete ban on the game and blamed it for at least hundred suicides throughout the country in recent times.
The apex court issued a notice on September 15, to the Centre in connection with a plea seeking a complete ban on the Blue Whale Challenge game. Following this, the Central government told the SC that it had set up an expert committee to look into the matter. Reportedly a report will be filed within three weeks.
Blue Whale Challenge is allegedly an online game which goes on over 50 days and demands the players to complete tasks given by an anonymous controller. Several survivors of the challenge claimed that the players are given tasks varying from carving a whale on their body to watching horror movies at odd hours. Eventually, this anonymous controller allegedly tells the player to commit suicide.
