TE Connectivity has launched Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) in India. The company said that Distributed Antenna Systems are central to 4G rollout plans of mobile operators. DAS will help mobile operators, as they need to cost-effectively deploy small cells.

TE believes DAS is more important alongside picocells and microcells in getting the maximum potential out of small base stations.

"By combining DAS with small base stations, mobile operators can get the best of both worlds - the reach, backhaul efficiency and spectral efficiency of DAS with the right-sized capacity of a small base station," said K. K. Shetty, director, Enterprise, Telecom & Wireless Networks, TE Connectivity - India & SAARC.

TE said that the in-building and outdoor wireless system will enable mobile coverage and capacity in places where service providers and enterprises have difficulty delivering wireless voice and data services to their customers.

Being independent of channel, protocol and BTS vendor, DAS allows easy future migrations and spectrum re-farm without redesigning Radio Access Network (RAN).

Furthermore, DAS is empowered to deliver multiple frequency bands in a single system over a given area, unlike picocells and microcells. DAS features simplified backhaul and driven from a base station hotel with a single point of backhaul.

The company said that DAS is easier and less costly to maintain than small base stations because it consists of few base station hotels feeding agnostic and full-band remote antenna sites.

DAS is currently being deployed regularly by major service providers in stadiums, malls, hotels, universities, airports, and other venues.

TE Connectivity plans to sell its Touch Solutions business to the Gores Group for $380 million.
